We

Love Local

We firmly believe that the best ingredients are seasonal and local!

We work closely with local Devon Farmers and follow the journey of the animal where it grazes its lifestyle and the farmers ethos of working with traditional local breeds which may not produce the biggest yield of meat but our traditional to Devon.

The majority of farmers have moved away from native breeds and moved towards large breeds creating bigger yields but sacrificing welfare and taste and jeopardising the existence of a lot of traditional local breeds.

The farmers we work with share our ethos of maturing the animal on the hoof rather than on the hook.

Pipers Farm

Pipers control every step of the process when it comes to our Red Ruby Beef. We carefully choose the linage of our cattle and breed our own herd of the stunning Red Rubies.

Our slow growing, native Red Rubies are born in a totally natural environment on Exmoor where this beautiful breed originates from. The mothers are used to the tough moor land grass and have been farmed traditionally in this part of the world for centuries.

100% grass fed beef! Once the young stock has finished the natural resource of their mother’s milk, at 8 months old, we bring them down to the grassy pastures of Mid Devon, where they eat a balanced, clover rich and grass foraged diet. Our Red Rubies are only ever fed from their mother’s milk and the pure natural grasses grown on our farms.

You will notice that Pipers Red Ruby beef has a wonderfully fine-grained texture, with plenty of natural marbling and a very rich beefy flavour.

Venison – Pipers raise our fallow deer for venison meat in the stunning grounds of Powderham Castle in Kenton 6 miles south of Exeter, slow grown and fed on ancient parkland grass, Pipers venison is simply sensational to eat.

Pipers only feed their deer on pure natural grass and allow them to grow slowly so they can reach natural maturity as nature intended.

Country Cheeses

Country cheeses want to introduce people to the old fashioned flavours of real cheese. The more people who taste the stunning examples of artisan cheese making in the Westcountry will help promote these wonderful products

So the demand increases and more and more farmers can be persuaded to diversify and experiment with using their milk to make cheese.

Shops in Totnes, Topsham and Tavistock.

Dartmoor Shepherd

Lewis & Flora keep the 3 traditional breeds of Longwool Sheep native to Devon. The Greyface Dartmoor, the Whiteface Dartmoor and the Devon and Cornwall Longwool.

As far as we are aware we are the only farm in the country to farm all three of these rare breed sheep. Being traditional bred sheep, our flocks are slower growing than todays modern commercial sheep flocks, This means they graze the ancient Dartmoor pastures for far longer than most sheep, which therefore means we produce superb tasting succulent lamb, with a real depth of flavour.
